Skinny jeans are very popular not only among girls but there's also a lot of guys wearing them. In punk style they are called also drainpipe jeans or cigarette pants. The material they're made of is stretchy and gets slimmer near the ankles. They are tight around the thighs and calves. Skinny jeans really were usually worn by girls only, but now there are also high school, college age groups, scene, emo, indie, punk or skater boys who like to wear them as well and for some of them it has actually become a part of their style. Of course these jeans that are meant for guys are a lot looser around the crotch in opposite to the girls skinny jeans.

To be honest with you I personally don't like to see skinny jeans on guys at all but that's of course just my personal opinion. I love to wear totally loose jeans - let's say Hip-Hop styled and my favorite brand is Quicksilver.

In 1950s Elvis Presley started to wear the drainpipe jeans. In this period of time the waist was a bit higher than on the skinny jeans you can see on people today. The other stars that helped to spread the idea of these jeans all over the world were Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, Zorro, Gene Autry, Marilyn Monroe or Sandra Dee. They were linked to create the "bad boy" image which you can find these days as well. The most famous rock bands wearing them were The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in 1960s.

In the early 70s the drainpipe jeans were developed in contrast to the flared trousers worn by hippies. The Clash, Ramones and Sex Pistols started to wear the Red tartan drainpipe jeans which were were important in the punk subculture of the late 70s. Starting the year 1980, most heavy metal bands such as Megadeath, Anthrax, Metallica and Slayer spreading further the skin-tight acid-washed jeans types. We can say that there was a big turning point in the 1990s where the Hip-hop/rap style came into the game represented by Snoop Dogg, Kris Kross, and other rappers. The drainpipe jeans went suddenly out of fashion. However it didn't took very long and in the 2000s they started to be very popular by indie revival bands like The Strokes.
